In terms of energy storage I believe pumped hydro is currently out best option. It has largely been proven to work and be cost effective. I believe OPG and TC Energy both currently have proposed pumped storage projects. They should be given support to ensure the project can be finished as soon as possible.
In ontario our cheapest and most reliable forms of generation are nuclear and hydro. We should be looking to expand both. Wind and solar have both proven to be the more expensive option and due to their intermitancy cause strain on the grid. As such we should be focusing our efforts on hydro and nuclear rather then solar and wind. It is clear to me that due to the urgency of our situation we should be focusing on technology that is already proven. Emissions-wise Quebec has successfully decarbonized with building their grid almost entirely on hydro, France has been successful with almost entirely using nuclear. No country currently can say they did the same with wind and solar, a prime example is Germany. We shouldn't waste time with unproven technology so I believe I am rightly biased towards proven technology. Hydrogen and battery storage also fall into the category of unproven technologies.
Our best hydro locations have likely all been used at this point. But we should use as much of the 5000 MW of undeveloped resources as is economically feasible.
However our best opportunity is new nuclear both large and small. We already have a world class operator in OPG and an excellent regulator in the CNSC. It will provide many high quality jobs during construction and operation, will have the majority of its supply chain based in ontario, and if done by OPG will provide additional revenue to the provincial government.
Community consultations are important but should not be allowed to indefinitely drag on a project (see the NWMO's repository). There will never be a complete consensus on these topics. So long as those that do not approve of the project are in the minority, we should be able to move forward with the project. In this case abstinence/indifference should be taken as approval.
Due to how important it is that we get off natural gas these projects should have their environmental evaluations fast tracked as I don't see anyway the positive environmental impact would be outweighed by the negative.
