My family and I have been residents of Toronto for 35+ years. I am also deeply involved in the energy transition. I can tell you, unequivocally from Germany and Denmark to California and Texas, the evidence overwhelmingly shows that nuclear is the ONLY solution that allows for 1) decarbonization, 2) grid resiliency, 3) energy sovereignty, AND 4) reduced energy costs to the consumer.
Advocates including any number of environmental NGOs use flawed studies from dubious authors to suggest variable sources of generation (solar, and wind) can be relied upon for an advanced economy. This is not true (the assumptions in those models are deeply flawed as is the use of LCOE as a comparison). System level costs AND emissions increase exponentially as variable sources of energy increase linearly.
You can google search for "Levelized Full System Costs of Electricity", a study that demonstrates when balancing and transmission costs are incorporated (which is the cost to the consumer and society), nuclear is FAR FAR FAR cheaper than solar+wind.
And no, no level of battery storage is going to come anywhere close to providing a viable alternative to nuclear this century.
EDF, Sierre Club, GreenPeace and others are pushing an anti-growth, deindustrialization agenda that leads to worse outcomes for the environment as well as mass impoverishment of society.
