How is it possible that the province of Ontario continues to reject climate science? Climate change is a real threat and as an environmental and economic leader, all of Canada needs to have a plan to do its part and reduce emissions. The Green Energy Act helps balance the social costs and benefits of fossil fuels with the benefits that are not accounted for from renewable energy. Such strategies can also help people save energy and create jobs in the $26 trillion clean economy.
Ontario should also maintain its role as a leader in renewable energy and help mitigate climate change through a price on pollution, making polluters pay for their emissions and returning the revenues to the pockets of citizens so they can lower their carbon footprint. Legally binding emissions targets are a crucial component that will help us meet our obligations under the Paris Climate Agreement. Furthermore, I believe that Ontario should end subsidies and handouts for fossil fuel companies and redirect this money to clean energy solutions.
The global trend towards renewable energy is clear and Ontario has an opportunity to be a world leader that also boosts R&D, economic growth and healthy environments.
