Canceling the cap and trade…

Canceling the cap and trade program without an alternative significant carbon pricing scheme is irresponsible and misguided. Climate change is the biggest crisis facing humanity today. We need to act decisively and we need to act now. The climate science and the economics have been clear for decades: we need carbon pricing to motivate emission reductions.

The only positive outcome of this bill will be that Ontario will end up with a federal carbon tax instead. A carbon tax with a high and rising carbon price and with revenues going directly back to Ontarians (not to the government) would be the best and most efficient market mechanism to reduce carbon emissions. The alternatives (cap and trade, regulations and subsidies) are less efficient and more subject to political manipulation.

Either drop this bill and retain cap and trade, or support the federal carbon tax and stop wasting taxpayer money challenging the exact thing that we need.
