Flowering rush should be listed as a 'prohibited' species in the invasive species act. I have seen first hand during my work in the environmental field how detrimental the plant is in our area. It has invaded shorelines, entire bays and been transported from one body of water to another. I first was aware of it on the Winnipeg River where like i said it took over a large area of water in a few bays, moved quickly from one property to another and continued to start new populations down stream. This plant is very hard to get rid of with tedious work continuing over a long period of time. On Lake of the woods, similar story. Cottagers and home owners are faced with competing for the shoreline and swimming areas. I can only imagine the environmental damages it causes. Monocultures reducing biodiversity, spawning habitats, wild rice plants which are culturally significant, and the increase of sedimentation. This plant must be prohibited before we see how bad the socio economic and environmental impacts are.
