I am writing to express a serious concern about the classification of flowering rush as a "Restricted" species within the Ontario Invasive Species Act, as opposed to the more severe (and more accurate) category, "Prohibited."
Flowering rush has been devastating to family cottages in Minaki, Ontario. It has ruined water access to two family cottages and is threatening a third property. In all cases, the properties have early origins in Minaki (for over 100 years), providing recreation to generations of family users. Stable waterfront was the norm until the onset of flowering rush about 15 years ago, chocking access for swimming and boating.
Flowering rush may not be as prevalent in other water systems and recreational regions. For those of us impacted, the proposed classification is unjustified and demonstrates further indifference and inaction by the Ministry.
I urge the Ministry to classify flowering rush as 'prohibited'. I am registered on your website and will follow the review process.
