I am writing today to express my concerns over the Ontario government's decision to categorize Flowering Rush as "Restricted" vs "Prohibited". I have property in Minaki, which is located in NW Ontario, north of Kenora. The devastation this invasive species has brought to the area is vast. Our swimming areas no longer exist. Dock access is completely blocked by this plant and the some waters can no longer be used by either boat, canoe or kayak. Our area is not the exception, you can see along most of the shoreline the evidence of flowering rush. It is simply EVERYWHERE. The distressing reality is, with such a significant impact currently, in another 20 years, complete bays will be blocked. In fact many channels one could get through 10 years ago are now completely clogged by this plant.
There is also an obvious ecological devastation. Spawning grounds for fish are being lost, beaches are no longer accessible, impacting to both residents and tourism.
My request is to recategorize this destructive invasive species to PROHIBITED. Thank you.
