Given that urban expansion is potentially limitless and that natural resources are limited, as well as the fact that once a resource is consumed, it is lost for all foreseeable generations, it is mandatory that the government protect our greenspaces for current and future uses. The government and society need to plan for greater urban densification along with greater infrastructure - not just roads but rapid transit, multi-use trails, bike corridors and recreational areas. Limitless urban sprawl must be avoided since it will eventually lead to unliveable mega-cities (without even factoring in the effect on, and the consequence of Climate Change).
It is instructive that in Toronto, the great ravine park system is only in place because urban development was blocked in these areas due to flooding concerns. These greenspaces are a jewel and add greatly to the biodiversity and quality of life for Toronto citizens. It is fortunate that these areas are subject to floods or they would have been consumed for industrial/residential purposes long ago to the great loss of us all.

We must plan for the future and preserve the truly priceless greenspaces that we have.
