Regarding ERO 019-7739
Premier Doug Ford recently said that the public doesn't give "two hoots" about commenting on the return of lands to the Greenbelt via Bill 136. He then went on to say people are more concerned about interest rates, food prices, gas and the carbon tax, and affordable housing. Of course, those are all things on many people's minds, but changing the subject to stop the opposition's questions about the small amount of time that the bill will be allowed to be commented on in the legislature doesn't make it any less of a diversion.
The government took the lands from the Greenbelt in 2022 and over the time until the decision was reversed there were enormous numbers of people who gave substantially more than two hoots about the flawed process that allowed it to happen.
Any important legislation regarding the Greenbelt or really, any legislation affecting wetlands, agricultural lands, native lands, mining claims and so on should all be allowed full public consultation. Land is not something that can be recreated or manufactured. One hour doesn't seem to be enough time unless the government is going to say something like this will NEVER happen again and write it on a stone tablet.
Poll numbers this far out from an election are not indicators of anything. Indicators of satisfaction with regards to how a government performs all hinge on transparency and accountability. Public input on legislation is crucial to keeping the province on an even keel.
