The Gravenhurst-Bracebridge-Huntsville corridor is undergoing significant population growth. Planners with a sense of community will want to strike a balance between the land taken up with more housing and services; the land required for tourism and seasonal visitors, and land preserved for wildlife and environmental sustainability.
Car camping is an important part of the mix, and it serves visitors who can not afford to rent a cottage, or stay at a resort. However, the choice to create more camping plots in a unique, protected area is the wrong one. Big Wind is needed as a refuge park, where humans are day visitors. As Bracebridge expands, it will be a crucial patch of green where future generations can seek respite from a growing urban footprint.
Ontario Parks should be looking for other Crown Land that is close to roads, and is not as pristine as the provincial park in question. Skilful design can produce an exc3ellent camping experience.
