Water is a natural resource that needs to be protected, not exploited. I would like to see Ontario aim to do better than a moratorium on bottled water extraction by prohibiting the bottling of water. Water is a basic need and it belongs to everyone. Private corporations should not be allowed to take something that is not theirs and profit from the sale of it. I would like to see our government focus on ensuring water from our taps is clean and safe for consumption for everyone. Bottling water is unnecessary and the consequences to both our environment and human health are unacceptable. Plastic is a result of mining and processing oil, which creates greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. Ontario still has no refund policy for plastic bottles so litter accumulates on land and in our bodies of water and this plastic waste won’t break down for hundreds of years. Human health is adversely affected by chemicals in plastic leaching into water that is bottled. Water security means leaving groundwater in the ground. Earth’s climate is changing and pressures and strains will be felt by all. Please prohibit the bottling of water to help ensure a safe and sustainable drinking water supply for the future, while ensuring that human health and the environment are protected.
