I live in Dresden Ontario. Where the proposed Dump/landfill site with previously YORK1 now sold to White Stone Fields (just a company since January 2025). It’s also notable that it is owned by an executive of YORK1.
This proposal will have a detrimental effect on our future economic potential as a community for the rest of time if this dump/landfill project goes ahead as planned. We are a community that is mostly agricultural in nature. Dresden is home to a food processing facility that has been employing generations of families and contracted farmers for growing the crops for the past generations. A canning factory has been established since 1903 in Dresden, built in 1902. That’s some history there! Farmers have grown their crops on family land and been able to harvest fresh produce for years. There are also farmers that grow vegetables for shipment to grocery stores and yes there are a lot of farmers that also grow crops for seed and food for animals (like cattle).
All of this is possible because we have great farms with healthy soil that are abundant in natural resources. We have many farms that are organic, and some that aren’t. But they are not sustainable if the ground water becomes contaminated. If this happens, the Sydenham River becomes contaminated. And the Sydenham River is one of the largest sources of natural sources of water for our economy in Dresden. Farmers are dependent on water for their crops. Workers in the fields are dependent on the crops growing. Workers in the canning factory are dependent on the safety of the crops growing to have their jobs.
There is also McBrayne feed and supply store in town that employs a lot of people all based around farming.
Without these jobs and livelihoods our town will become a ghost town.
Just from a state of safety for farmers and the canning factory. Do you really want this contamination in your food? Would you like to eat this?
How are you going to support the town, the farmers, the workers etc if we lose so much from our economic system
