I am writing to express my strong opposition to the Ontario government’s proposed legislative changes that would dismantle critical environmental protections, including those for over 200 species at risk. The move to repeal the Endangered Species Act and replace it with a less stringent framework prioritizes rapid development over ecological responsibility.

These changes would allow developments to proceed without comprehensive environmental assessments, threatening habitats essential for species like the redside dace and the butternut tree . The introduction of a “pay-to-kill” provision, where developers can pay into a conservation fund to bypass species protections, further commodifies our natural heritage .

Moreover, granting the government authority to override environmental regulations in designated “Special Economic Zones” sets a dangerous precedent, undermining democratic oversight and long-standing environmental safeguards.

Ontario’s natural ecosystems are invaluable, not only for biodiversity but also for the health and well-being of its residents. I urge the government to withdraw these proposed changes and uphold its commitment to environmental stewardship.
