We are in the midst of a biodiversity crisis. Humans are not at the top of a food chain: we are part of a complex interwoven system of plants and animals. The interactions between these organisms- a bee pollinating a flower, a rabbit eating a piece of grass- have cascading impacts on the entire web of life. When humans let our hubris dictate our actions and put ourselves above the rest, our actions eliminate pieces of this web. This has a domino effect that will eventually come back to hurt us.
This is the human-centric reason to oppose bill 5. It is simple common sense and survival instinct to want to preserve the ecosystem we rely on.
There is also something to be said, however, of opposing this bill simply because it DOES threaten other species. Our most vulnerable species. And should each organism, from the mighty moose to the smallest pond weed, have an opportunity to thrive and survive?
If Doug Ford selfishly pushes this bill forward, it will be catastrophic. Plants and animals will feel it first- do not doubt that some will go extinct or at least be extirpated from Ontario.
But eventually, us humans will feel it too. You will have Doug Ford to blame when we do.
