I have serious concerns that 'Special Economic Zones' this policy will be used to bypass Ontario labour laws, decades-old environmental legislation and attempt to breach treaties with Indigenous groups.
The Provincial Government should be setting an example to business how to work within the existing public policy to achieve intended outcomes: economic development, fair wage protection and environmental protection. Any modification to public policy that compromises these any of these outcomes is an outcome that is anti-Canadian. These protections through public policy have existed for decades to ensure that there responsible growth that responsibly managed, accountable and transparent. All governments are temporary, legislation is permanent and protects the public interests of the current population and future generations.
The health and welfare of Indigenous people in Canada should be self-determined. I wholeheartedly disagree with the Provincial Government using public dollars to fight Indigenous peoples in courts: where there is a Duty to Consult, this must be done in a purposeful way that meaningfully incorporates the local peoples wishes and priorities into the any development projects that will have temporary and future impacts.
Temporary threats such as tariffs are not to be used to undermine Canadian values and current legislation.
