This proposal would limit municipalities capacity to ensure that new development is not only built quickly, but also remains energy-efficient, livable, and affordable over the long term. Cities and their residents must have the right to require developers to meet certain standards to ensure a sustainable and livable environment in cities and towns across the province.
This proposal would restrict municipalities from applying standards that help lower utility bills, reduce infrastructure costs and cut emissions, delivering lasting affordability year after year. Restricting application of urban design and lighting standards, for example, would add ongoing environmental degradation including light and noise pollution that Ontario citizens, including future generations, would have to degredation with (and die with) many decades into the future.
Rather than restricting municipalities from applying important standards the province should work with cities, planners, architects and developers to streamline processes while retaining guideposts that ensure the affordability and health of the places where Ontario citizens live.
I also fully support the recommendations of The Atmospheric Fund (link provided).
