I am concerned that the opening of Nancy Island to private developers is going to be a lead in to selling other parts of our provincial parks to developers whose only motivation is to build homes and cottages for wealthy people. Likewise, I am concerned that these developments may not really be for the benefit of all Ontario residents, but very very few, or worse, sold to foreign interests. The Ontario Place spa deal, in which an unreasonably long lease was signed by the Ford government is an example of how poor planning and hasty decision making is going to hurt a majority, of less influential Ontarians everyday. I fear that the current Ontario government will be similarly blinded by quick financial-only decisions here. For example, any development that closes down the historical site HMS Nancy is contributing to a dilution of Canadian heritage and sovereignty. Heck, that museum is a prime example of us defending our interests against America colonial interests! War of 1812! Surely this government does not intend to sell that land to American cottagers! This is a sell out to Canadian values. Equally shameful would be building on land that is environmentally unique to Ontario. To a government that doesn't care about Ontario Place's hundred year old ecosystem, and whose development model is to clearcut everything, I am very concerned that we are again seeing the wanton destruction of Ontario provincial park habitat (in this case a bird nesting site). It is also an example of cooperation between the US and Canada. Again, Nancy Island is patriotic, and a symbol of cooperation between two nations. Any development MUST be checked by neutral, knowledgeable and non-politician personnel, and given to biological science-trained experts to decide. Some of us still want to see a thriving green, natural world when we vacation, not a concrete tourist trap. Please don't sell (or lend) Ontario provincial park lands (and healthy ecosystems) to any builder corporations, especially those who have no ecological or historical expertise. Ontario is for all its citizens, not just the wealthy, privileged, or temporarily elected.
