Commentaire

Hello,

I am writing to share my concerns about the proposed changes to Wasaga Beach Provincial Park, especially the removal of protections from key beach areas and the transfer of Nancy Island.

I understand the intention is to support tourism and downtown revitalization — and as someone who cares deeply about this area, I know how important that is. But removing these areas from the provincial park system feels short-sighted and risky, especially from an environmental and Indigenous rights perspective.

**Environmental concerns:**
Once these areas are no longer part of the park, we lose protections that help preserve the shoreline, dunes, and wildlife habitat. These aren’t just busy summer beaches — they’re sensitive ecosystems that support species like the Piping Plover, and they depend on careful management. Without those protections, we open the door to erosion, pollution, and development that could permanently change the natural feel and function of the beach.

**Indigenous rights and process:**
The proposal also doesn’t make clear what kind of consultation has happened with Indigenous nations who may have deep connections to this land. This is Crown land — which in many cases was taken without consent — and selling or repurposing it without proper engagement and transparency raises real concerns. There’s an opportunity here to do better: to work in partnership with Indigenous communities, and to consider stewardship models that reflect their knowledge and rights.

**My ask:**
Please reconsider this proposal. Take the time to consult properly, and explore ways to support economic development that don’t come at the cost of environmental health or Indigenous sovereignty. Wasaga’s future should be built on care — for the land, the people, and the history that lives here.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and for considering community voices in this process.
