This proposal does not protect or conserve important lands and water. It poses a serious risk to many species, including the endangered Piping Plover. These tiny shorebirds have made a fragile comeback with the help of careful stewardship and protections. Wasaga Beach is one of the last remaining nesting grounds for these endangered birds. Many other species enjoy the habitat of this area too, endangered or not. Provincial parks must be conserved, not developed.
Provincial parks are public lands and must not be sold off to private developers. Provincial parks belong to the people of Ontario, and to the species that live there. Provincial parks offer a great opportunity for members of the public to enjoy nature and learn about how important it is for us to protect it.
Rather than providing a short-term online comment period on the ERO, it would be far more beneficial for all involved to hold public meetings to invite ideas and strategies that will help to reach the best decisions.
Please do not approve the proposed amendments to the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act, 2006, and the Historical Parks Act. The Town of Wasaga Beach's Tourism Enhancement Proposal needs to respect public interests and the environment first. Our provincial leaders must ensure they do.
