Comment on Proposed Amendments to the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act (ERO Number 025-0694)
I strongly urge the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) to reconsider the proposed amendments to the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act, especially the sale of public land in Wasaga Beach Provincial Park and the transfer of Nancy Island under the Historical Parks Act. While the goal of boosting tourism and economic growth is understood, the long-term environmental and social consequences of this proposal are concerning.
Environmental Concerns
Removing Beach Areas 1, 2, New Wasaga, and Allenwood Beach from the provincial park and selling them to private developers would pose serious risks to the local environment. These areas are vital for maintaining local ecosystems, wildlife habitats, and the overall health of Wasaga Beach’s shoreline. Privatization will lead to more development, increased pollution, and potential destruction of natural resources. This decision sets a dangerous precedent that could encourage the privatization of other protected areas across Ontario.
Impact on Public Access
Selling these lands will likely result in commercialization, limiting public access to the beach. Only those who can afford entrance fees or private memberships will be able to enjoy these spaces, which will exclude local residents and lower-income visitors. Wasaga Beach should remain a public resource, accessible to all.
Indigenous Consultation
The proposal raises concerns about insufficient consultation with Indigenous communities. With Bill 5 and Bill C-5, there is a risk that the voices of Indigenous leaders may be ignored. Indigenous peoples have a deep connection to these lands, and their input should be prioritized in any decision that affects these areas.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
From,
A concerned citizen.
