Hello,
I was so disheartened to hear of this proposal. This is an ecologically significant beach, especially to Endangered Piping Plovers. There’s only a handful of these birds in Ontario and it’s the least we can do not to destroy the habitat they need to nest and grow their population. The birds at the least need some very sparse vegetation and a bit of driftwood to use as cover - these are tiny birds and they need to be able to hide from predators.
The town does not have the means to properly manage the beach for piping plovers (all they need is a little space and for the beach to remain natural). If this property is handed over to the town - which should not be legal to do so since the beach is currently under provincial management and voters have not approved this - there will no longer be any protection for the plovers and the town has already made their intentions clear: theyre planning on grooming the beach in hopes to attract more tourists. Not everything should be about money, plus the beaches can absolutely be enjoyed in their natural state. These few beaches are the only area these birds have, and it is possible to respectfully share the beach! The birds just need a little space to live, and I think we can at least give them that! These endangered birds already face so many other threats, the least we can do is not destroy domestic of the best nesting habitat they have. Furthermore, being protected under both provincial and federal law, it is the duty of elected officials/governments to uphold that law!
I will be very upset if this proposal goes through. I expect my elected officials to represent my (and others) concerns regarding this and I will remember the outcome when the next election comes around.
