Dear Sir/Madam
This Wasaga Beach proposal is not a viable or responsible option—particularly considering the unique and non-renewable Glauser Sand that forms the ecological base of Wasaga Beach. Once this sand is disturbed or removed, it cannot be naturally replenished, resulting in irreversible damage to the beach’s integrity. Continued mismanagement by an unqualified and short-sighted municipal authority will only lead to the creation of a small-minded, amusement park-style development. This is entirely incompatible with the long-term ecological and economic health of the region.
The entire beach must remain protected and professionally managed by Ontario Parks and the Ministry of Natural Resources. Handing over stewardship to a municipality that prioritizes short-term tourism gains over environmental preservation undermines the foundational purpose of our provincial park system.
Moreover, our climate does not support year-round tourism. Wasaga Beach experiences long winters, high winds, and harsh conditions for most of the year. A tourism-centric economic model is unrealistic and unsustainable. We cannot build a lasting community on seasonal visitors alone. What we truly need is a sustainable, year-round community supported by families, small businesses, and responsible stewardship of our natural resources and wildlife.
The proposed legislative amendments by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) to remove large portions of Wasaga Beach Provincial Park—including Beach Areas 1, 2, New Wasaga, and Allenwood—would only serve the Town’s short-term strategy for increased tourism and speculative investment. This approach risks dismantling the natural and cultural value of the area in exchange for a fleeting economic boost, leaving behind a fragile, fragmented landscape and a hollowed-out community.
We must focus instead on building a resilient, inclusive, and environmentally conscious town—one that values its natural assets, supports local enterprise, and plans not for nine weeks of peak tourism, but for the future of the next generations who call this place home.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
