Have followed the development of Wasaga Beach - from the xpropriation and demolition crews of the 1970 - Wasaga Park Community Development Project - the development of a sewer and waste treatment - getting a plummer to run for mayor in the 1970s ... the bulldozing of the dunes in Beach Area 1 for parking lots... It could have been like the National Beach Parks in PEI - but it was botched as in Wolfe's 1952 paper - Wasaga Beach - the Divorce of the Geographic - maybe somebody in Ontario should read it.
Roy I. Wolfe's 1952 paper, "Wasaga Beach: The Divorce from the Geographic Environment," explores how the development of Wasaga Beach as a tourist destination had become disconnected from its natural geographic setting. The paper highlights the shift from a natural landscape to a heavily developed recreational area, impacting the original environment.
Adding development that fights the natural environment will never be world class.
Beach Areas 1 and 2 should remain in public owership - the cars and existing built development removed, relocated (maybe to Elmvale and public transit people in) and nature allowed to rebuild the dunes. Then you would have a world class attraction.
Oppose this proposal. Too bad Ontaio never invested in tourism of its natural wonders for the last 100 years - oddly Mike Harris was on the right track when it came to protected areas.
If it involved concrete and paving the last natural areas it is always a sad day. Ontario Parks not for sale - but you could invest in them properly (protect the natural features) and they would be the backbone of the Ontario Tourim Industry.
