Wasaga Beach should not be for sale. This beach is essential habitat for the endangered Piping Plover. This bird and its habitat are protected under both provincial and federal laws and should be treated as such. Biodiversity is being threatened, which doesn't just affect the flora and fauna; it affects us. Without continued protection of biodiversity, we are at risk. This is only the beginning. Ontario needs to take a step in the right direction and not sell Wasaga Beach.
Additionally, this beach is already an established provincial park. The Ontario Parks system is very beneficial to all Ontarians and brings in money to the Wasaga Beach community. While selling part of the beach to contractors can bring in some money in the short term, more people will be able to enjoy the beach and bring in tourist dollars if the beach is not sold. This beach is very important to tourism and is a selling point for Wasaga Beach. The "world's longest freshwater sandy beach" brings in around 1.1 million visitors every summer to see this preserved natural beach. If you alter this beach with development, it will impact the natural beauty of this area.
Ontario has already taken a step back in environmental protections with the passing of Bill 5 earlier this year. We need to do better for ourselves and for our environment. Development will irreversibly change this incredibly important environment. Do not sell this beach.
