As one of the +-160 piping plover monitors at Montrose Sanctuary in Chicago, I can testify to the importance of protected habitat as a crucial element – – in fact indispensable – – of protecting and fostering the population of the Great Lakes Piping Plover.
As you can imagine, our sanctuary is in the middle of a very dense and busy urban population. If it were not for the protection that various concerns – – including U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Chicago Park District, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and more – – there would be no chance for these beautiful and endangered shore birds to find a relatively safe place to make their nests, Incubate their eggs and protect and defend their baby chicks as they grow and eventually fledge.
With so many things out of our control as climate change reeks havoc across our world, this is ONE thing we can do— create safe spaces for endangered species to grow and thrive.
I would also add that we have visitors coming from all over the world to visit our piping plovers – – there is economic benefit to creating protected spaces for a wildlife, and it is shortsighted to not take stock of this fact. People truly care about nature, and they are inspired and motivated when they see projects such as ours.
I encourage you to take the path of conservation, rather than the easier path of indifference.
