The government is the trusted guardian and caretaker of the province's public lands, ALL paid for by taxpayers. Protected lands need to remain as they are, now and for future generations. To begin the dissolution is to set precedence, which leads to the eventual destruction of our public parks, forests and waterfronts, and runs roughshod over everyone's rights. An attempt by this government has already been made to destroy parts of the Greenbelt and sell it off to the highest bidders. To begin selling our beaches and public parks to developers for private ownership, is only the beginning to a slow dismantling of our public parks and lands.
We all have the right to access these lands, whether it's to swim in the lake, camp or picnic in the park, to simply explore, protect our forests and water supply. Ecologically, it affects endangered species and removes any kind of buffering from storms, particularly high winds and water.
In the specific the case of Wasaga Beach, removing public access to a beach that has been available to generations of people, removes any public trust and is a gross misuse of public money that has been invested in our public lands. Blocking/removing access to waterfront, which belongs to the people of this province, and not just the Town of Wasaga, for the sake of a few private dwellings, is unconscionable.
