I do not support this proposal.

Red tape is defined as “official routine or procedure marked by excessive complexity which results in delay or inaction”. It appears disingenuous for the government to suggest that it is getting rid of red tape by removing the requirement for a developer to strictly adhere to local or provincial requirements, or to publicly consult, simply because it meets a minimum job creation threshold.

If this proposal were truly aimed at reducing red tape, then these requirements would be removed for all developers. Instead, it appears to potentially remove environmental and other safeguards for the perceived benefit of the economy. To leave the final decision to a ministry on a case by case basis especially leaves a significant gap for protection.

The province cannot rely on political promises alone that the government will not disturb Ontario’s Greenbelt. What is required is clear legislation that holds the government (both present and future) accountable for protecting the people of Ontario as well as the environment.

Many concerns have been raised in the media about how these changes could result in another Walkerton tragedy. Whether it is drinking water or other protection measures, there is no reason to minimize the effects of these protective laws for the sake of job creation. The Ford government needs to recognize that “the people” are concerned about the economy but not at the cost of the environment or their own safety.
