Hello,
I am deeply concerned about the future of endangered piping plovers in Ontario. I know that Wasaga beach is one of the most important nesting grounds for piping plovers in the province. If handed over to MTCG, there will be no more regulations protecting the ecological integrity of this habitat. As such, I do not support the transfer of this land from MECP to MTCG.
If this transfer is to go ahead, it is critical that MTCG fully commits to protecting and bolstering populations of nesting piping plovers, and abides by the science-based recommendations of Birds Canada, such as restricting mechanical raking and other types of habitat destruction, and actively monitoring and protecting known nests. Other important considerations would be to spread public awareness about the species and have the public notify officials if they spot a nest (this can be a highly enriching experience for kids), and to either ban dogs on the beach or ensure they are kept on leash and well away from known nests. Furthermore, any abuse of piping plovers or their nests by people or their dogs should be punished with strict fines.
Thank you for your consideration. Please do the right thing.
