As a concerned citizen of Canada and professional who has worked on Piping Plover recovery in Atlantic Canada for almost 20 years, I'm writing to express my strong disapproval of this proposed land transfer. Although 2.91 hectares may not seem like a lot of land to remove from provincial park designation, it will set a dangerous precedent, erode the integrity of the provincial park system in Ontario, and threaten the fragile recovery of endangered Piping Plover in the Canadian Great Lakes. Biodiversity and ecosystems within provincial parks greatly benefit from the long-term protections afforded from the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act. These protections are incredibly important for breeding Piping Plover, which are highly sensitive to human activities and habitat degradation. The Ontario government should be proud that Wasaga Beach Provincial Park is the most productive breeding site in Ontario for Piping Plovers. Please do the right thing and do not proceed with this land transfer.
