This site is the most important remaining Piping Plover habitat in Ontario, producing half of the province’s fledglings since 2007. Under provincial management, tourism and endangered species protection have successfully coexisted for nearly two decades. Removing provincial protections would leave this critical habitat with no enforceable safeguards, placing the species at serious risk and undoing years of conservation success. Wasaga Beach must remain under strong, science-based protection. Any management plan should restrict mechanical raking, prohibit dune alteration, safeguard nesting areas with buffer zones, and use natural predator control. Long-term funding, habitat monitoring, and public education are essential to ensure the continued survival of Piping Plovers alongside recreational use of the beach.
This is one of Ontario’s few conservation success stories for an endangered species, and it must be preserved for the future.
