Wasaga Beach is Ontario’s most productive Piping Plover nesting site, and its success has come from science-based protections under Ontario Parks. Removing the protections will leave this endangered species without legal safeguards, putting decades of conservation work at risk. Any decision should ensure that Piping Plovers are protected and conserved by a science-based management plan and resources that guarantee year-round habitat protection, protect nests with fenced buffer zones, ban harmful activities such as dune alteration and mechanical raking. Funding should be committed to protect and conserve Piping Plovers, their nests, their habitats. Experts such as Birds Canada should also be involved in delevopment and implementation of the plan.
