I am very concerned about what these changes will do to the habitat of the piping plover. These birds are endangered and Wasaga Beach is one of the most important habitats for them. The government has already weakened protections for endangered species with Bill 5 and taking away provincial park land that is known as habitat for an endangered species does not bode well for the future of that species.
The beach habitat of the piping plover is becoming increasingly rare and has to be managed very carefully. What will the government do to ensure that habitat is maintained and these birds continue to thrive?
A science-based management plan is essential. This plan should include: restrictions on mechanical raking, which can destroy nesting grounds; not allowing changes to sand dunes and the fragile ecosystems that exist in them; fencing off nesting areas to keep people and predators away.
We need this government to make a commitment to protecting the Wasaga Beach environment and the piping plovers that nest and make their homes there.
