I am writing to express my disapproval of the proposal for the province to sell a large swath of rare beachfront property for the purposes of redevelopment in the town of Wasaga Beach. This proposal raises a number of red flags. The area proposed is home to rare and endangered species, and the loss of provincial protection risks serious and irreversible damage to the unique beachfront environment and the species that inhabit it. We have proof of this in the community of Sauble Beach, when the municipality ignored provincial protections and destroyed protected habitat.
This proposal is another indication of the alarming urge of the government of Ontario to bypass protections that are in place for the enjoyment of all Ontarians. We have already witnessed the embarrassing debacle that followed the removal of Greenbelt protections in order to enrich developers, eroding trust in governing bodies. The lack of transparency in providing details about the current proposal, and the changing of laws to rush through development approvals that could cause long term environmental damage is all cause for concern.
Wasaga Beach has been a success story for many years as a popular tourist destination that was concurrently able to provide protection to sensitive environments. Surely the people of Ontario have the ingenuity to find a way to allow development that will benefit the economy and provide homes, while avoiding trampling on environmental protections.
