I am writing in support of the Provincial initiative to promote cycling by building cycling infrastructure.
I commute to work by bicycle every day and I also cycle long distance for fitness and recreation.
As a commuter, I need protected infrastructure in the city, protected bicycle lanes and protected intersections. I find that the current design of intersections where at least one road has a bike lane is dangerous. Especially dangerous are cars making a right turn across a bike lane. Also, cars often use the bike lane to pass cars waiting for a left turn. There are better designs of intersections (google for safe intersection) that avoids all those issues. I think that the province should encourage the municipalities to adopt these safer intersection designs.
As a long distance cyclist (I go for 150-200km bike rides), I find it difficult to find safe routes. Many roads with 80 km/h speed limit are very unsafe for cyclists in the absence of a wide shoulder. The cars zoom past cyclists at 90-100km/h on such roads with very little distance between the car and the bicycle. Please let's aim at connecting all major towns with cycling routes, ideally separated from car traffic.
