Good Day
Many municipalities have a network of multi-use pathways unfortunately these pathways are not properly interconnected and very often are not really gear towards cyclists but they could be. Recently they have started to add Pedestrian Crossing (PXO) to join some pathways, but no Cross-rides for cyclists. At the present time MTO does not permit Cross-rides and PXO to be joined together, therefore forcing the cyclist to dismount their bikes. This is unfortunate since these pathways would be a safe environment for family with younger children to safely ride to the soccer game and so on, but dismounting the bikes at each streets crossing makes it unpractical.
At the present time all off road pathways are not control by any laws, since the Highway traffic act does not apply to them and most municipalities have no bylaws. If the intent is to increase the use of these pathways they will need to be more regulated since education alone does not seem to be enough to convince some users to share the pathways.
It would greatly help to have proper uniform marking on the pathways to educate/inform the public about multi-use pathways.
