This legislation ignores the fact that bicycles and the like are also modes of transport. Their use clicks all the right boxes when it comes to sustainable, as well as pollution and carbon-free mobility. Cyclists have the right to a dedicated roadway, particularly in view of the higher risk for injury when sharing an un-partitioned roadway with motorized vehicles. Unfortunately the lack of foresight by past planners has left us with restrictive infrastructure that must oft be shared. This, however, doesn't justify that one mode of transport should take precedence over another. If dedicated bike routes cannot be provided then the existing infrastructure must be shared. Why does this government feel that these publically funded routes should be restricted to only those who can afford to drive. The trend worldwide is for more people to use bicycles and other less powerful vehicles for their last mile of travel. It is clearly the direction of future urban infrastructure. It is such a disservice to Ontarians, especially the younger generation, for this government to ignore this trend and behave as if we are still in the 1950s. This proposed legislation is shameful, illogical and authoritarian and should be dismissed.
