I’m writing from Hamilton to oppose the proposed bike lane and Highway Traffic Act changes in Bill 60. These amendments would take away the ability of cities to make evidence-based decisions about safer, more efficient streets. Giving the Province power to block any reallocation of road space would harm communities rather than help them.
I bike several times a week for errands, recreation, and short trips around Hamilton. I’ve seen how protected bike lanes and traffic-calming projects make streets safer for everyone — people walking, biking, and driving alike. They also reduce speeding, encourage active transportation, and make neighbourhoods more vibrant.
Bill 60 would reverse this progress. It would worsen congestion, increase collision risks, and undermine local climate and transportation goals. Even the government’s own experts have confirmed that bike lanes do not cause gridlock.
This is not about being “pro-bike” or “anti-car.” It’s about local democracy, safety, and common sense. Please withdraw or amend Bill 60 to restore municipalities’ authority to plan their own streets based on evidence and community needs.
