I strongly oppose the provisions in Bill 60 that would restrict municipalities from building new bike lanes or reallocating road space for safer and more efficient transportation.
Bike lanes and other street redesigns are not a cause of congestion—they are a proven, evidence-based way to reduce injuries, improve traffic flow, and make streets safer for everyone. Removing cities’ ability to plan and build such infrastructure ignores local evidence and undermines community decision-making.
Bill 60 would:
• Strip cities of the authority to make transportation decisions suited to their local conditions.
• Increase congestion and danger by discouraging walking, cycling, and transit use.
• Undermine Ontario’s Vision Zero, climate, and public-health goals by locking us into car-dependent design.
• Threaten other vital uses of street space—such as bus lanes, school streets, and curbside safety zones.
Toronto and other Ontario municipalities have shown that protected bike lanes save lives and support local businesses. The Province should be helping cities expand this proven infrastructure, not banning it.
I urge the government to withdraw or amend Bill 60 to preserve municipal authority, uphold public safety, and enable evidence-based transportation planning across Ontario.
