I am writing to express my strong opposition to Bill 60, the Fighting Delays, Building Faster Act. As a resident of the Greektown neighborhood in Toronto, my bicycle is my primary mode of transportation. I use it every day to commute to work and to support local businesses in my community. My time on the road has shown me firsthand how urgently we need more protected infrastructure, not less. I have had numerous near-accidents, including being "doored", and have personally witnessed several serious collisions that dedicated bike lanes would have prevented.
Safe cycling infrastructure is about much more than just my personal safety. It is a critical investment in our province's future. Protected bike lanes promote a healthy, active lifestyle, which reduces long-term healthcare costs. They are a powerful tool in our fight against climate change, offering a zero-emission transportation option that improves air quality for everyone. Furthermore, they support vibrant local economies: as a cyclist, I find it far easier to stop and shop at small businesses. These benefits create healthier, cleaner, and more livable communities.
This bill is a major step backward. By giving the province the power to ban any reduction of motor vehicle lanes, you are ignoring the overwhelming evidence, including reports from the government's own experts, that shows removing bike lanes does not solve congestion. This bill's broad wording takes power away from municipalities and threatens not only essential bike lanes but also vital projects like bus priority lanes and safer school streets. We need to be making our streets safer and more accessible for everyone, not blocking common-sense improvements based on a disproven premise. I urge you to withdraw this bill.
