As a resident of Toronto, I strongly oppose the proposed amendment to the Highway Traffic Act under Bill 60, which would prohibit municipalities from reducing vehicle lanes to install or mark new bicycle lanes.
Toronto faces serious challenges with traffic congestion, air pollution, and road safety. Local governments must retain the flexibility to design transportation infrastructure that reflects the unique needs of their communities. This proposal undermines that autonomy and risks stalling progress on active transportation, climate goals, and public health.
Bike lanes are not just a lifestyle choice — they are essential infrastructure. They reduce emissions, improve safety, and offer affordable mobility options. Blocking their expansion in favor of preserving vehicle lanes sends the wrong message about Ontario’s commitment to sustainability and livable cities.
I urge the Ministry of Transportation to reconsider this proposal and instead support municipalities in building balanced, multimodal transportation networks that serve all residents.
