I strongly oppose Bill 60. This legislation represents a serious overreach by the provincial government into decisions that should be made locally. Municipalities are best positioned to decide how to use their road space, including whether to add or repurpose lanes for cycling infrastructure.
It makes no sense for the provincial government to restrict cities and towns from building bike lanes if doing so involves adjusting existing road layouts. This policy directly undermines local autonomy and threatens the safety of cyclists.
As more people choose to cycle to work — particularly in response to climate change and increasing urban congestion — safe cycling infrastructure is essential. Many of my close friends and family members commute by bike, and protected bike lanes are what keep them safe. Limiting municipalities’ ability to build these lanes will needlessly endanger Ontarians and discourage sustainable transportation.
This bill is short-sighted, unsafe, and an inappropriate use of provincial authority. I urge the government to withdraw it immediately.
