I wish to state my opposition to Bill 60. I am concerned by many things in the bill both from both a practical and democratic point of view.
First of all, as both a car owner and a cyclist I know very well that bike lanes are not the reason there is congestion. I can see that when we build subdivisions and highways without any reliable public transit, people need to buy cars and this inevitably leads to more congestion. Your own experts have consistently said that bike lanes do not cause gridlock. In fact, the reason I have started biking was because I could not handle being stuck in traffic any longer.
Getting rid of bike lanes also makes roads more dangerous and further distances us from the important infrastructure changes we need to be making to fight climate change! Also from a health point of view, it would serve the government finances very well if more people walked and biked to work/school/etc. If the government really cared about people it would be investing in infrastructure that supported active transit more, not less.
Finally, I am concerned that this bill strips cities of local authority and decision-making, even when projects are supported by evidence and local residents. I do not know what infrastructure projects are a good idea in every community and I am pretty sure that the provincial government does not know this either. I would much rather the provincial government focused on improving our health and education systems, then telling municipalities what they can and can not build
