This legislation is ill-conceived and should be rejected outright.
The province should not be permitted to dictate to municipalities their management of their own roads.
This approach perpetuates the “cars are king” mentality, assuming that all public spaces should be exclusively reserved for automobile traffic. However, any study of urban design demonstrates that this is a misguided, polluting, and ultimately self-defeating position. Cities like Paris and Barcelona have demonstrated the positive outcomes of removing cars from urban areas. Travelers to Europe are often astounded by the quality of these cities. Nevertheless, we appear to be incapable of learning from these examples. Cars are inherently dangerous and polluting machines, and there should be times and places where they are not given precedence. It should be the municipalities’ responsibility to determine where and when they are permitted.
In the City of Toronto, there is no room for the expansion of automobile users, as the city is effectively at capacity. However, there is ample space to increase the number of users for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit. These are the solutions of the future, and cars have reached their peak.
Please do not permit this legislation to be enacted.
