I am a nurse in Toronto. I believe that this proposal endangers our progress towards lowering emissions, which is something we are legally bound to do according to the Paris agreement. I am a cyclist. I bike to work and to get groceries and run errands. I want infrastructure to help shield me from harm. Bike lanes are importing measures to protect cyclists, and encourage more people to cycle. Cycling is good exercise, and has a much lower carbon footprint than cars, even if they’re EVs. Every cyclist on the road means one less car taking up space and adding to congestion. This bill could also be used to block plans for dedicated transit lanes. We need to be moving away from cars to methods of transportation that curb emissions and relieve congestion. There is simply not enough space on the roads in Toronto for everyone to drive a car. I challenge the current government to show us the evidence that maintaining the status quo in terms of number of lanes and their current use by cars, will solve the congestion problem facing cities like Toronto where I live.
