I am writing to voice my opposition to limiting a municipality's ability to remove car lanes in Bill 60.
No urban area has succeeded in "fighting delays" by optimizing for cars.
Specifically, I'm opposed to:
195.3 (1) Except as permitted by the regulations, a municipality shall not, by by-law or otherwise, reduce or permit a reduction in the number of marked lanes available for travel by motor vehicles on a highway or a portion of a highway under the municipality’s jurisdiction and control for any of the following purposes:
1. A bicycle lane.
2. Any other prescribed purpose.
Car lanes are a public good/space. The public good/space should be maximized. Maximizing for cars is not always optimal. Yonge St, north of Sheppard, is a very, very dense neighbourhood - 6 lanes to carry car traffic is no longer an optimal use of the space. Also, car lanes may not be the best way to move people around. It's why you see so many Uber delivery drivers on e-bikes - they can deliver so much faster on e-bikes than in cars stuck in traffic. We can "fight delays" by improving modes of transit other than cars.
