I am a driver, pedestrian and cyclist in the city of Toronto and I have experienced first hand the powerful effect that bike lanes have had in making a street vibrant with activity. Fewer car lanes makes for safer crossings and bike lanes also provide a nice buffer to insulate pedestrians on the sidewalk from the noise and danger of car traffic. This turns these areas into places where people want to come and spend lots of time (and money) in their local communities.
Blanket legislation that removes this option from municipalities (who know what is best for their neighborhoods) knee-caps the best kind of small business local economic growth we could hope for.
In cities where they have gone so far as converting entire areas into pedestrian only zones those areas have become cultural and economic hubs that draw tourism and the most prestigious vendors.
