I’m writing to demand that you rescind and/or oppose the Fighting Delays, Building Faster Act, a damaging piece of legislation that includes a reckless power grab that bans bike lanes and gives the Minister of Transportation sweeping authority to block anything that “interferes” with car traffic, including bus lanes, pedestrian crossings, and safety projects.
This policy is not about “keeping people moving.” It’s about cementing car dominance and putting lives at risk, and continues a concerning pattern of silencing local democracy. Cities across Ontario are working to make their streets safer, but this bill would slam the brakes on that progress, banning municipalities from building any bike lane what would involve road reconfiguration, and putting cars before people. Not only that, this bill also hampers municipalities' ability to implement other space reassigning measures such as exclusive transit lanes. Public transit is an essential piece of reducing the environmental impacts of transportation, and this measure puts it strictly behind driving as a viable alternative in urban areas.
Banning bike lanes and space reallocation in roads for other uses such as transit exclusive lanes is indefensible. It will mean more deaths, more pollution, and more gridlock, not less.
I urge you to oppose against this bill and stand up for the right of municipalities to design safe, livable streets.
