This bill is exceedingly irresponsible. I do not even use a bike but I firmly oppose this bill. This bill is designed to put the lives of cyclists and pedestrians in danger; it will not even do anything to reduce traffic delays.
The right-of-ways in Ontario’s roads are wide by international standards. Carving out a small slice of existing ROW’s to create bike lanes does not result in a narrow ROW by international standards. If your assumption is that Ontario’s drivers will not be able to drive safely in the narrowed ROW’s you are insulting Ontario’s drivers.
When I was in university I tried biking to school once. Having to share the road with trucks and other fast-moving vehicles was a harrowing experience. I was so scared I never biked again.
A very relevant anecdote: last evening, in Toronto, I witnessed a cyclist (a person making food deliveries) stopping on the road to talk to someone who appeared to be a colleague. The flow of motor vehicles was blocked for several minutes. If a bike lane existed, motor vehicles behind would have been able to move forward because the bike and the motor vehicles would be in different lanes; whether the cyclist stopped would have been irrelevant.
What I witnessed last night shows that banning bike lane will not reduce traffic delays at all; in fact, the ban will make the problem worse by creating more traffic delays.
To reduce traffic delays we should be building more bike lanes, not banning them.
