I am absolutely outraged by Ontario’s proposed amendment to the Highway Traffic Act that would prohibit municipalities from reducing motor vehicle lanes when installing or marking new bike lanes. This is not just bad policy—it’s an outright attack on local democracy, public safety, and the future of our cities.
Municipalities know their streets far better than Queens Park ever will. Taking away their ability to design safer, more livable communities is an astonishing level of overreach. Road safety experts, urban planners, and public health officials have been clear for years: reducing car lanes to create protected bike infrastructure saves lives. It reduces collisions, encourages active transportation, cuts emissions, and supports vibrant local economies.
This amendment ignores evidence, bulldozes local authority, and prioritizes the convenience of drivers over the safety of cyclists, pedestrians, and even other motorists. It’s a reckless, backwards step that will make our streets more dangerous and our communities less healthy. Instead of modernizing transportation policy, the province is effectively legislating against safety and sustainability.
Ontarians deserve better than ideology masquerading as governance. This amendment must be rejected immediately.
