I am a member of the Municipal Heritage Advisory committee of the Rideau Lakes Township. I am familiar with the process to have a home or property 'designated'. For the township to designate a home or property we currently require the agreement of the owner. In reading the proposed changes to the Ontario Heritage Act I conclude that, under the proposed revisions, the home/property can be designated without the consent of the owner although the owner must be advised of the township's intent to make it a designated home/property. Is this a correct interpretation of the proposed revision to the legislation? The reason for asking is that some owners do not want their home designated as it results in an increase in their home insurance and makes it more difficult to sell.
